Variational ($VAR): Strong Builders, Heavy Supply. A Pre-TGE Dossier

Written for the quest “Seeing the Long Game” with Fractured on The Republic.

What it builds. Variational is an Arbitrum-based protocol for on-chain derivatives across crypto, equities, commodities and FX. Its retail app, Omni, offers 500+ perpetual markets with zero trading fees. Trades are priced via RFQ, and the Omni Liquidity Provider (OLP), a vault plus an in-house market-making engine, is the counterparty to every trade. The protocol earns by routing 20% of the spreads paid to OLP into its treasury. The docs say this rate is still being tested.

Tokenomics. The official $VAR page confirms a Q4 2026 launch with three buckets. 32% is a Genesis airdrop to points holders, fully unlocked at TGE. 18% is an Ecosystem Reserve at the Foundation’s discretion. 50% goes to team and investors, locked 12 months and then unlocked over at least 3 years. Total supply, FDV, emissions and the team/investor split are not disclosed. Several third-party sites still claim “50% to community”, which the primary docs contradict.

Unlocks and dilution. At TGE, circulating supply is 32 to 50% of total, so FDV is 2x to 3.1x market cap from day one. Insider unlocks start at month 13. Assuming a linear 3-year schedule, about 1.39% of supply unlocks each month. That is roughly 4.3% monthly inflation on a 32% float. By month 24 the float is about 52% larger than at TGE. The team intends to buy back and burn $VAR with 100% of treasury revenue. That is a statement of intent, not a binding mechanism.

Team. The founders, Lucas Schuermann and Edward Yu, are publicly named. Per the docs, they co-founded Qu Capital, which DCG acquired, and later held senior roles at Genesis Trading. Bain Capital Crypto and Peak XV co-led the $10.3M seed (The Block, Oct 2024). Zellic and Spearbit audited the contracts in 2024–25, but no audit of 2026 code is listed. Claims like “ex-Jane Street engineers” and “369% OLP yield” are marketing and can’t be verified.

Risks. OLP is the counterparty to all trades, and the docs say future PnL becomes “bad debt” if OLP is insolvent. Omni is still in invite-only beta after its public launch slipped. The points rules can change at the team’s sole discretion. US and Canadian users are restricted. The airdrop unlock and the month-12 insider cliff are two predictable supply shocks.

Verdict. The team is strong and the revenue model is real, but the token is dilution-heavy and key supply data is missing. Watch, don’t chase. Our view improves only if the pre-TGE disclosures show conservative supply and longer vesting.
