Variational ($VAR): Pre-TGE Tokenomics, Dilution and Risk Analysis
Written for the quest “Seeing the Long Game” with CrySt on The Republic.
Research Question
Variational already operates a live onchain derivatives product while its $VAR token has not yet launched. The key question is whether the disclosed token structure creates reasonable long-term alignment, or whether the post-TGE supply structure introduces material dilution and sell-pressure risks.
Project and Product
Variational is building onchain derivatives infrastructure. Its Omni application provides perpetual markets, while the underlying Variational Protocol is designed for peer-to-peer clearing and settlement through isolated onchain escrow contracts.
The official website describes a model where liquidity is aggregated from crypto exchanges and traditional financial institutions. Variational also positions Omni as the first application built on the protocol, with additional institutional products planned.

Tokenomics
According to Variational's official $VAR documentation, the token is planned to launch in Q4 2026.
The disclosed allocation is:
-
Genesis Distribution: 32%
Distributed proportionally to points holdings. 100% of this allocation is unlocked at TGE. -
Ecosystem Reserve: 18%
Reserved by the Variational Foundation for ecosystem growth and allocated at the Foundation's discretion. -
Team and Investors: 50%
Locked for 12 months after TGE and then unlocked over a minimum of three years. Team members are also subject to individual vesting. The exact split between the team and investors has not yet been published.
Variational also states that it intends to use 100% of revenue directed to the treasury to buy and burn $VAR.

One major limitation is that the official token page does not currently publish a numerical total token supply or launch price. Therefore, a conventional dollar FDV cannot yet be calculated from primary-source data.
Unlock and Dilution Model
An important distinction is that 32% of total supply is unlocked at TGE, but this does not mean that 32% will necessarily be circulating supply.
Unlocked supply represents tokens that are technically available to holders. Actual circulating supply depends on claims, distribution mechanics, holder behavior and any tokens released from the Ecosystem Reserve.
Using the published Team + Investor terms, we can create a simple illustrative dilution model.
| Time | Genesis unlocked | Team + Investors unlocked | Potential unlocked excluding Ecosystem |
|---|---|---|---|
| TGE | 32.0% | 0% | 32.0% |
| Month 12 | 32.0% | 0% | 32.0% |
| Month 24 | 32.0% | ~16.7% | ~48.7% |
| Month 36 | 32.0% | ~33.3% | ~65.3% |
| Month 48 | 32.0% | 50.0% | 82.0% |
This model makes one explicit assumption: after the 12-month lock, the entire 50% Team + Investor allocation unlocks linearly over exactly 36 months.
The official language says "over a minimum of three years", so the real schedule may be slower.
The 18% Ecosystem Reserve is deliberately excluded from this deterministic timeline because Variational has not published a fixed release schedule for it. Foundation discretion therefore remains an important source of dilution uncertainty.
Dilution and Sell-Pressure Risk
The clearest short-term risk is the Genesis Distribution. A 32% allocation being fully unlocked at TGE creates a potentially large liquid overhang if a significant portion of recipients chooses to sell.
However, it would be incorrect to describe this as "32% circulating at TGE." The defensible statement is that 32% is unlocked at TGE, while actual initial circulating supply remains unknown.
The insider structure is more favorable in the short term. Team and investor tokens remain locked for the first 12 months, which removes half of total supply from immediate post-TGE selling pressure.
The risk is delayed rather than eliminated. Under the illustrative 36-month linear model, Team + Investor supply would add approximately 16.7 percentage points of total supply per year between months 12 and 48.
The Ecosystem Reserve is the largest unresolved variable. Because its 18% allocation is controlled by the Foundation and no fixed unlock schedule is stated, it cannot be incorporated reliably into the dilution curve.
Team Verification
Variational's official materials identify Lucas Schuermann and Edward Yu as the founders and describe the team's background in institutional trading and technology. The official website also lists established institutional investors.
These are materially stronger verification signals than an anonymous team or unsupported marketing claims, although they do not eliminate technical, execution or token-design risk.

Key Risks
Launch sell pressure: 32% of total supply is unlocked at TGE, creating potential selling pressure from Genesis recipients.
Unknown initial circulation: unlocked supply and circulating supply are not equivalent, and an official initial circulating-supply figure has not been published.
FDV uncertainty: without an official total token supply and launch price, dollar FDV cannot yet be calculated reliably.
Ecosystem Reserve discretion: the Foundation controls 18% of supply without a fixed public release schedule in the cited token documentation.
Insider overhang: Team + Investors receive 50% of supply. The 12-month lock is positive for near-term alignment, but a significant multi-year unlock remains afterward.
Execution risk: Variational's long-term value depends on reliable derivatives infrastructure, liquidity, risk management and sustained adoption.
Regulatory risk: perpetual futures and other onchain derivatives may face jurisdiction-specific restrictions and changing regulation.
Conclusion
Variational is unusually researchable for a pre-TGE project because its core allocation percentages and insider lock structure are already public.
The strongest alignment feature is the 50% Team + Investor allocation being locked for 12 months and then released over at least three years.
The main counterweight is supply uncertainty. The 32% Genesis allocation is fully unlocked at TGE, while another 18% sits in a discretionary Ecosystem Reserve.
For that reason, the key metric to watch before TGE is not simply "32% circulating." Variational still needs to clarify actual initial circulating supply, the Ecosystem Reserve release policy, the exact Team/Investor split and the information necessary to calculate launch FDV.
Until those variables are published, the tokenomics look structured enough for further diligence but still contain meaningful launch and dilution uncertainty.

I do not hold $VAR because the token has not launched. This research was prepared as part of a Republic research exercise. Any separate Omni points participation or other incentive exposure should be disclosed by the author if applicable.
