Project Research Dossier: Polymarket (pre-TGE) what's verifiable before POLY exists
Project Research Dossier: Polymarket (pre-TGE) Eastern Campaigns / Seeing the Long Game · 29 Sep 2026 · Status: POLY token confirmed but not launched, no public sale ever held, no ICO/TGE active. PDF attached below.
1. What it builds and why it matters Polymarket is the largest prediction market: buy YES/NO shares that redeem at $1. Two venues: an international on-chain exchange on Polygon settling in USDC (open-source CTF Exchange, operator-matched order book, on-chain settlement), and a US CFTC-regulated exchange obtained by acquiring QCEX ($112M, Jul 2025) with a CFTC Amended Order of Designation in Nov 2025. In 2026 it shipped Polymarket V2 (new exchange, collateral token, combinatorial markets, oracle aggregator) and a perpetuals contract, all with public audits.
Why it matters: ~$9B volume for all of 2024, then a monthly peak of $10.5B in Mar 2026 and $8.9B in May 2026 (Sacra estimates). Fees were zero through 2025; a taker-fee schedule started in 2026, so revenue is new: Sacra estimates ~$1.0B annualized as of Jun 2026. CMO on 24 Oct 2025: "There will be a token, there will be an airdrop." Nothing about supply, snapshot, date or utility has been published since. Fundamentals visible, token terms invisible = long-game setup.
- Tokenomics: public vs not • Token: POLY confirmed (24 Oct 2025). NO supply, allocation, vesting, utility or TGE date. • Public raise: none, ever. All capital is private equity. • Private funding: ICE (NYSE parent) $1.0B Series D Oct 2025 (~$8B pre) + $600M Series E 27 Mar 2026 = $1.6B cumulative. Sep 2026: reported ~$1B round at ~$21B post led by 1789 Capital (media, not a filing). Disclosed primary capital ~$2.76B (Sacra est.). • Cap table: ICE ~23% outstanding / ~14% fully diluted (Sacra est.). Founder stake undisclosed. • Fees: taker fees by category, maker rebates funded from taker revenue. US venue: flat taker fee + maker rebate. • Airdrop "5-10% of supply" numbers floating around = speculation. Polymarket published nothing.
Why the cap table matters for the token ~$2.8B of equity raised at up to ~$21B, with a public company (ICE) holding a large stake. Equity already owns the fee stream. Unless POLY gets explicit rights (fee share, governance over the on-chain venue, collateral/staking role), it is a marketing asset sitting beside a $21B equity company, not on top of its cash flows.
My decision rule: (a) No contractual claim on fees or protocol control → treat as a distribution token, don't buy above the airdrop. (b) If it does get rights → benchmark FDV vs ~$1.0B est. annualized revenue. FDV/revenue above ~15x is expensive for a fee-switch token given Kalshi competition and fee compression. (c) Equity investors receiving token allocations with shorter locks than the airdrop = red flag.
- Unlock and dilution risk** • Nothing is modelable yet, so model the shape: (1) airdrop unlock at TGE, usually 100% liquid; (2) investor/team tranches, where the Sep 2026 round will have the shortest cliff relative to TGE; (3) ecosystem/liquidity incentives. Assume the first 6-12 months post-TGE carry peak sell pressure and airdrop recipients are net sellers. • Farming overhang: airdrop was pre-announced without a snapshot, so volume since Oct 2025 includes wash/sybil activity. Treat reported volume as an upper bound. • Two-venue split: the US venue settles in dollars via FCMs, not USDC on Polygon. If token utility is tied to the on-chain venue only, addressable revenue is the international share, not the total.
4. Team verification: verifiable vs marketing • Founder/CEO Shayne Coplan, CMO Matthew Modabber: verifiable via company/ICE press releases, public since 2020. • ICE investment and CFTC status: verifiable (ICE IR release 27 Mar 2026; QCEX PR Jul 2025; CFTC order Nov 2025). • Open-source, audited contracts: STRONG. GitHub org has 103 public repos with daily pushes (SDKs pushed 29 Sep 2026). The contract-security repo lists every deployed contract with audits: V2 Exchange by Cantina, Certora, Quantstamp, Pashov, SigmaPrime, Zellic (Apr-Aug 2026) plus Certora formal verification (Aug 2026); Perps by Quantstamp, Cantina, Certora (Apr 2026); Deposit Wallet by Certora, Zellic, Cantina (Mar-Jun 2026). • "Decentralized resolution": PARTLY. The V2 oracle aggregator combines UMA Optimistic Oracle, a Chainlink reporter module AND an EOA reporter module (a single key can report). Decentralization depends on which module a market uses. • Volume/revenue figures: estimates (Sacra). On-chain volume is checkable on Polygon; fee revenue is not.
- Key risks** • Regulatory: 2022 CFTC settlement ($1.4M) forced a US exit. The 2025 return relies on the QCEX licence and intermediated access; state regulators still contest sports/event contracts. A CFTC posture change hits the US venue directly. • Oracle/resolution: UMA-based resolution has been gamed by large token holders in past disputes; the V2 EOA reporter module is an explicit centralization point. Resolution integrity IS the product. • Token value accrual: the biggest risk for a token buyer. Equity already owns the business; the token has no published rights. • Metrics quality: pre-announced airdrop inflates volume; fees are months old, revenue durability unproven. • Competition: Kalshi (US-regulated, no token) and exchange-backed entrants; taker-fee compression likely.
6. Disclosure No token exists and I hold no Polymarket equity. No paid or advisory relationship with Polymarket, ICE or Legion. If I have traded on Polymarket I may be airdrop-eligible; flagging that as a potential bias. Written for the Eastern Campaigns quest (Valor Points incentive).
