Project Research Dossier: Base (Coinbase L2), pre-token

Open original Discord thread

TL;DR: Base has no network token, no public raise and no ICO/TGE. Leadership says it is only "exploring" a token, with "no specifics… around timing, design, or governance." A native token standard (B20) is live since Beryl (Jun 2026), which is not proof a token will launch. Verdict: watchlist, not thesis.

  1. What it builds • Coinbase-incubated Ethereum rollup; 2026 focus: tokenized markets, stablecoins, builders. • Feb 2026: moved from the OP Stack to its own unified stack (base/base). • Upgrades: Azul (TEE+ZK multiproofs, ~1-day withdrawals when both proofs agree), Beryl (B20 standard, bridge delay 7→5 days). Cobalt is next.

  2. Tokenomics • FDV, circulating supply, allocations and vesting: none disclosed, because no token exists. • "BaseToken"/"BASE" appears only as default params in B20 benchmark code (PR #2765), not in a deployment. • Value accrual today: sequencer fees go to the operator (Coinbase). A token would need a real fee, sequencing or staking role to capture value.

  3. Unlock / dilution (illustrative model) • A. Airdrop plus insiders on a 1-yr cliff: ~15% float at TGE, big overhang at M12. • B. Linear 4-yr emissions: steady sell pressure. • C. Treasury-led, low float: low early dilution, high governance risk. Red flags at TGE: insiders >50%, low float with high FDV, or a governance-only token.

  4. Team signals ✅ Public leads (Pollak, Armstrong), open-source repo, bug bounties, Stage 1 with a Security Council, Coinbase is SEC-listed. ⚠️ "Airdrop guides" and fake "BASE claim" sites are not official.

  5. Key risks US securities law · revenue already flows to Coinbase · single sequencer, still Stage 1 · lower client diversity after leaving the OP Stack · fast upgrade cadence brings new precompile bug surface. Disclosure: No BASE holdings (none exist), no compensation from Coinbase or Base. Not investment advice. PDF attached. Challenge any claim; I'll reply with sources.
